Although adequate brushing removes plaque deposits it does not attend to the surface areas between your teeth. This is where flossing, or interdental cleaning, is used.
Techniques
Wind about 45cm of floss around your middle fingers and use your index and thumbs to hold the string for accuracy and control.
Slide the floss gently between your teeth and use a side-to-side motion (this also helps remove any food deposits left).
Repeat this procedure for all teeth.
Throw away the used floss as bacteria from your mouth is left on the flossing surface. It is recommended for children to start flossing once teeth touch, as the gaps become smaller, brushing will not remove all the plaque sufficiently.
